How a Fall Roof Inspection Saves Money on Winter Ice Dam Damage

Close-up of a damaged shingle roof with a large hole exposing broken wooden boards and underlying roof structure.

If you saw icicles on your gutters last winter, did it give you pause? Or perhaps the thought of more water stains on the ceiling is not what you are looking forward to this season. The best way to put an end to roof trouble before the cold and snow set in and make for pricier repairs is with a fall inspection.

We at Bachman’s Roofing can put your mind at ease. For all of Pennsylvania and New Jersey we have been in the business of protecting homeowners’ property since 1972. Call (888) 775-7384 and let us explain the value of an inspection.

Any roof has its work cut out for it in the winter, none more so from an ice dam. But some forethought in the fall will spare you money and aggravation when the weather turns.

What Is an Ice Dam?

It is what happens when the snow on your roof thaws and makes its way to the colder edge to refreeze. A ridge of ice will develop there, obstructing the drainage. Before long the water is forced under the shingles and into the house.

Water intrusion is quick to do damage. You are left with mold, warped framing, drywall that has been soaked and insulation ruined. It is not an inexpensive proposition to remedy.

Make the Most of the Fall

The weather is still on your side in the fall to put right any minor issues. With the onset of ice and snow a repair is no longer simple; the cold also puts a strain on roofing materials.

Too often we see homeowners put off making a call until a leak appears. The bill then is far more than it should have been because the damage is done. An inspection is a low cost way to get ahead of things and it will be worth it.

Our Inspections Are Thorough

Our in-house crews know where to find the weak spots that are an invitation to ice dams. We will be checking for:

  • Shingles that are cracked, missing or curling
  • Flashing in bad shape around the valleys, vents and chimney
  • Downspouts and gutters clogged with melting snow
  • Any indication of uneven temperatures from a lack of attic ventilation
  • Insulation that is too thin or compressed to keep the heat in
  • Soft areas or the first hint of water getting in
  • Sealant on roof penetrations that is loose or breaking down

All of these can be part of the melt and refreeze process. Tended to in the fall they ensure the roof drains as it ought to over the winter.

Where the Savings Come In

Do the numbers and it is obvious. Dealing with a small repair in October is nothing like having to replace drywall and ceilings in January. Water does not stay on the roof; it can make its way to your floors, walls and electrical.

By minding a clogged gutter or a shingle out of place you sidestep the whole chain of events. And with the right insulation and ventilation your home will retain heat better, something that shows up on the energy bill in the depth of winter.

We take care of the gutters and downspouts as well, to be sure the snow has somewhere to go and does not pool at the edge of the roof.
